Background of the study
Nigerian dialects are renowned for their rich phonological diversity, particularly in the use of tone and stress patterns. These phonological features are central to meaning differentiation and emotional expression in spoken language. This study conducts a comparative analysis of tone and stress patterns across various Nigerian dialects, examining how these features contribute to both semantic precision and cultural identity (Ogunleye, 2023; Afolabi, 2024). The research involves acoustic analysis of speech recordings from different regions, focusing on variations in pitch, duration, and intensity. By comparing these parameters, the study seeks to identify systematic differences and commonalities in how tone and stress are employed. Such an analysis is critical for understanding the linguistic mechanisms underlying dialectal variation and for informing speech recognition technologies tailored to Nigerian languages. Moreover, the study highlights the importance of preserving phonological diversity in the face of globalization and language standardization pressures, contributing to broader debates on linguistic identity and cultural heritage.
Statement of the problem
Despite the central role of tone and stress in conveying meaning in Nigerian dialects, comparative research on these phonological features is limited. The lack of systematic analysis restricts our understanding of how variations in tone and stress influence communication and cultural identity, and it hampers the development of accurate speech processing technologies (Ogunleye, 2023). This research gap calls for a focused study on phonological differences across dialects to inform both theoretical linguistics and practical applications.
Objectives of the study:
• To compare tone and stress patterns in Nigerian dialects.
• To analyze their impact on meaning and identity.
• To provide recommendations for speech technology development.
Research questions:
• What are the key differences in tone and stress among Nigerian dialects?
• How do these features affect communication?
• What implications do these differences have for language preservation?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of phonological features in Nigerian dialects, offering valuable insights for linguists, technologists, and cultural scholars. The findings will aid in developing speech recognition systems and preserving linguistic diversity (Afolabi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is confined to tone and stress patterns in selected Nigerian dialects and does not extend to other phonetic features or non-dialectal varieties.
Definitions of terms:
• Phonological Features: Characteristics of sound systems in language.
• Tone: The use of pitch to distinguish meaning.
• Stress Patterns: Variations in emphasis within speech.
